                  Club Notes 24th May 2015

Seniors - Away to Coolkenno at 6.30pm on Sat 30 May.

Intermediates - Replay of the called off match Darcy Sand Intermediate Football Championship in Hollywood v Donard/The Glen at 7.30pm.

Junior B - Challenge match at home v Ballymore Eustace at home at 7.30pm. Campus Oil football league Div 4 Round 7 away to Lacken on Thurs 28 at 7.30pm.

Junior ladies - The Juniors had two very good matches this week. First up was Kilbride on Tues evening and away to AGB on Sat evening.  Numbers travelling have been low 11 and 10 players for these matches mainly due to exams and some injuries but the girls that did travel were fantastic. Both games were more or less level on the score board at half time . In both games Blessington created more chances than the opposition  throughout the game and won the majority of kick outs. Kilbride and AGB were able to bring on fresh legs in the 2nd half of both games which made the difference. Team play , defence and attack play have all improved significantly over the last 3 games. A big thanks to Alison Young and Jennifer O’Brien who both travelled to Arklow at very short notice. Nobody could ask for any more from the girls as it's not easy for 11 players playing a full pitch for a full match against fresh legs. Best of luck to all the girls studying for exams.

U12 girls - Congratulations to Niamh Cullen, Sorcha Nolan, Orlaith Behan and Sarah Bohan on their selection to play on the U12 county team. The girls have their first blitz on Sat 6 Junin Carlow.

It's  great to have some new members join us over the last few weeks. A big welcome to Elaine Haughian, Siobhan Laffen and Sara Jane Lynch.. New members always welcome call Sinead 0862446510 or Kevin 0876123203 for info or just turn up at 7pm at training session.

1974 Junior Championship Reunion

On Friday 12th December a reunion of the 1974 Junior Championship winning team took place in Hennessy's Lounge.

It was great to see all the not so young lads turning up. Stories, reminiscences were talked about late into the night and by the end of the night, there was no doubt , that even now the lads would hold their own with our current Senior team!!

For the record the team that took the title was as follows - Mick Doran, Patsy O'Donoghue, Shay Sargent, Andy Doran , John Magee, Pat Quick, Martin Hennessy, Tommy Cullen, Arthur Hennessy, Popsy Finnegan, John Finnegan, Jerry Hennessy, Paddy Murphy, John Coogan, Seamus Breen. Subs- Davy Byrne, Christy Nolan, Paddy Sargent, Des Kennedy & Tom Mc Grath. Team Manager Gerry McIntyre, Selectors Peter Finnegan, Jimmy Hughes Pete Nolan, Paddy Magee & Toddy Hennessy.

That victory was the springboard to the club getting back to Senior status in 1979 and going on to win Championships at Intermediate and Junior level and ultimately A Senior victory in 1983. Many of the team are still involved in the club at Committee level and all are solid supporters of the club. It was also appropriate the in this anniversary year the Club also won the same two cups - The Swan Cup and the Tutty cup. Many thanks to Ronan Hennessy who sponsored some lovely refreshments on the evening.

Blessington GAA U8 Notes

On Tuesday 15th July, 33 of our U8's together with coaches and parents travelled by bus to Croke Park for the Leinster U8 Go Games. We had two teams of 9 playing against St Cuthberts of Meath. Given the numbers we had travelling most kids only played one half so that everyone could get a game. Both Blessington teams played extremely well and won both matches. Before the games the players and coaches viewed one of the dressing rooms. On the way home we stopped in McDonalds to feed all the hungry players. Overall it was a fantastic experience for all concerned. A team photo is available from for any parents who didn't get a copy on the day.
